The Difference Is What You Don't See
About the only thing people like about vinyl siding is the “insulation” that is installed under the vinyl. The perception is that you can save an amazing amount of money by installing insulation on the outside of the house although you already have it inside the walls of your house. Insulation is measured by its R-value which is the measure of its resistance to heat flow. The way it works is simple: the higher the R-value, the more the material insulates. An R-value is assigned to the “insulation” behind vinyl that generally ranges from a 1 to just over a 4. The average wall insulation has an R-value of 19.
The fact is that the “insulation” under your vinyl is only there to provide a smooth nailing surface to simplify installation of the new siding. An R-value is assigned by companies to make it seem as though you are getting the added benefit of energy savings thus saving you money. But, wouldn’t you agree that if the R-value measures resistance to heat flow, it doesn’t stop heat flow? And wouldn’t you agree that if heat has escaped your walls already that any extra layer on the outside of the wall won’t help you save any money?
That’s why we use the Energy Armor Siding System™- a combination of house wraps that not only creates a multi-layer weather barrier, but also can drastically reduce energy costs at the same time.
Once your siding has been removed from your house we inspect the sheathing for rot and insect damage. 40% of homes that we work on have some degree of damage to the sheathing that would not have been discovered had it simply been covered by vinyl companies that merely cover existing siding. Once the bad sheathing is replaced, we install a house wrap with reflective properties that is designed to virtually eliminate the radiant heat transfer in your home. It’s called Energy Armor®. It is Energy Star certified and complies with and is eligible for the energy tax credit act of 2005 (extended to 2008).
The second layer of the Energy Armor Siding System® is another house wrap which is manufactured by Pactiv® called RainDrop®. RainDrop® is the first ever house wrap with vertical drainage channels that actually move water away from the wall. The channels won’t crimp, collapse, or flatten no matter how tightly the cladding is affixed to the wall. Obviously, our goal is to eliminate water from getting behind your siding, but if it does your house is protected.
The Energy Armor Siding System™ is available only through Blue Ridge
Exteriors. Don’t settle for anything less!
